Coin Information

The second issue of the new Lunar Series was struck by the Royal Australian Mint from one ounce of 99.9% silver and is dedicated to the Year of the Ox. Following the rat, the Ox is the second animal in the Chinese zodiac calendar. The motive depicts a strong ox surrounded by the branches of a willow, symbolic of humility. Additionally, the inscriptions “YEAR OF THE OX”, the Chinese character for “ox”, as well as the weight and fineness are included in the design.

The reverse features the lunar calendar wheel, with all 12 animals on the wheel, the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as well as the denomination and the year of issue. Those born under the sign of the Ox are considered strong-willed, determined and particularly reliable. The conscientious ox is characterized by high moral standards for himself and others, as well as his strong sense of duty. The limited Year of the Ox Premium Silver Bullion Coin is delivered in a protective capsule.

  • Obverse: the coin shows the bust of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by artist Jody Clark. The 12 lunar animals of the Chinese Zodiac surround the Queen’s bust in a circle around the coin’s rim. Inscriptions include The Queen’s name, “AUSTRALIA”, the coin’s denomination, and the year of mintage.
  • Reverse: displays a bull standing beneath drooping willow branches, designed by Bronwyn King. Inscriptions include “YEAR OF THE OX” and the weight and purity of the coin.
